How to Get Ungated on Amazon

Ungating trips up almost every new seller. Amazon has actually made it easier lately.

PUBLISHED SEPTEMBER 11, 2026

Ungating is one of the biggest hurdles new sellers face, but the good news is Amazon has made the process easier in recent months. You just need to be persistent. You do not need to use an ungating service — sketchy practices from some of these services can get your account suspended permanently. And you do not need to pay for an ungating course either.

Don't rush it in the first few months

For your first few months, you don't have to apply to ungate anything. Just sell what you're already allowed to sell, and a lot of gates will open automatically as your account ages. It's perfectly fine to go slow at the beginning while you learn.

A retail receipt is usually enough

Retail receipts are fine. Packing slips or pick-up slips also work when they look enough like an invoice. I've been selling for over four years, and that's all I've ever used for ungating. The receipt needs all the required information, and ideally the word "INVOICE" printed somewhere on it.

A lot of sellers won't tell you which stores they use for ungating — that's fine, you don't need them to. Just order one cheap item from a store to see what its receipt looks like. Do this systematically and keep good records. For some stores, ordering items you'd genuinely use personally works just as well.

Go one category at a time

Don't feel you have to get ungated in everything at once. Start with one category, get approved, then move to the next, then start adding brands. Focus on the brands you already have the most leads for.

Expect to be rejected — a lot

Amazon almost always rejects the first submission. If you end up submitting 10 or even 20 times, that's not unheard of. Amazon may warn you not to open a new case each time — you can just reply to the same case with each new submission.

Build a clean documentation packet

Photograph the item from all sides, including close-ups of barcodes and model numbers. Print the receipt and photograph all units sitting next to it. Drop everything into a Word doc and save it as a PDF. You can combine multiple PDFs into one at ilovepdf.com — having everything in a single file makes life easier for the reviewer. Emails and tracking pages can all be printed to PDF too.

Vary what you submit each time

Don't submit the same packet twice. Escalate what you include with each attempt:

  1. Invoice only
  2. Invoice + photos
  3. Invoice + photos + credit card statement
  4. + order emails
  5. + tracking info
  6. After that, just keep varying the order of the files

Even if you don't have a great-looking receipt — maybe all you've got is order emails — it's still worth trying, as long as all the required information is there somewhere.
